In 1982 when legendary German film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder sadly died, he was nearing completion of a project that was to have changed his international profile for ever. After Return of The Jedi entered production, George Lucas wanted to make sure the next film in the series exceeded all expectations. Taking advice from his old film professor at University, George hired Fassbinder and gave him the script for The Phantom Menace. Fassbinder was immediately inspired and produced the film in parallel to his well known classic Querelle. Starring a younger, leaner JaJa Binks than appeared in the eventual Lucas directed version, the film gives off a strong erotic charge which the latter version strives for and misses. Fassbinder’s version was never given a full release, and has lain unmolested in the vaults of the Munich Film Repository for too long. This poster artwork shown on the T-shirt was sketched out by Lucas and Fassbinder themselves and was only recently rediscovered. I have the exclusive rights to it.
